Bakhtin's book on Rabelais starts from the premise that Rabelais has been seriously misunderstood by 20th century critics because they failed to engage with important aspects of life in the 16th century which shaped Rabelais magnum opus Gargantua and Pantagruel. Approaching texts solely from a 21st century standpoint will give a different reading experience and in my view one that tells only a part of the story. It is also beneficial to have an understanding of etymology and of the writings and thoughts that influenced men (and some women) of letters. This of course means that there is some reading to be done to enable one to understand something of the life and times in which the authors lived. My recent (over the last couple of years) reading of Medieval literature and renaissance literature has taught me that to appreciate their works it is essential to approach the authors on their own terms as far as possible.

The novel is often extremely black farce, but that could be a reason for more serious naming. Rose Pickles: I suppose it’s a statement. There’s Fish Lamb and his brother Quick (because he’s slow), their sisters Elaine, Hat, and Red in comparison, the Pickles are treated mildly: they’re Dolly, Chub, and Ted, with sister Rose. And this is probably the place for me to mention my doubts about the characters’ names I don’t see why they need to be ludicrous. As Alex Miller says in his thoughtful introduction: Cloudstreet is the greatest Australian novel ever to have been written about the iconic and rapidly disappearing class of white Australians who gave the people of this continent its reputation as one of the finest and most generous-hearted on the planet. ‘Lamb and Pickles,’ guffaws Sam, ‘It’s gunna sound like a counter lunch.’ Since Tim Winton is writing it, that is presumably his intention. The two families come to live together in a vast rambling mansion in Perth which gives the book its title: it’s in Cloud Street. He is resuscitated, but too late his brain is damaged. The Lamb family, on the other hand, believed in God rather than luck, until their son Fish (short for Samsonfish, Samson being his given name) drowns while prawning in the river. He goes to work and loses his fingers in a winch: when he takes his glove off, they ‘fell to the deck and danced like half a pound of live prawns’. What do you do when you wake up in the morning and feel the shifty shadow of God lurking? You stay in bed, and hope that it’ll pass you by, that’s what. He wrote the book during his imprisonment. The book provides a broad view of Indian history, philosophy and culture, as viewed from the eyes of an Indian fighting for the independence of his country. Nehru was jailed for his participation in the Quit India Movement along with other Indian leaders, and he used this time to write down his thoughts and knowledge about India's history. Nehru uses his knowledge of the Upanishads, Vedas, and textbooks on ancient history to introduce to the reader the development of India from the Indus Valley civilization, through the changes in socio-political scenario every foreign invader brought, to the present day conditions. The journey in The Discovery of India begins from ancient history, leading up to the last years of the British Raj. The book was written in 1944 but published in 1946. The Discovery of India was written by the Indian Independence leader, Jawaharlal Nehru (later India's first Prime Minister) during his incarceration in 1942–1945 at Ahmednagar Fort in present day Indian state of Maharashtra by British colonial authorities before the independence of India. 14 November 1946 76 years ago (at Signet Press, Kolkata, India) After much contemplation over whether to stay in Abnegation or switch factions, Beatrice chooses to switch to Dauntless, and Caleb moves to Erudite. She is warned to never tell anyone of her results - it is dangerous to be Divergent. Beatrice shows aptitude for three different factions, Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless, and this means she is something called Divergent. The test consists of a simulation of a confrontation with a vicious dog. She and her brother Caleb, who is not quite a year her elder, take the aptitude test that will tell them which faction they are most suitable for. Children are raised in their parents' faction, and once they turn sixteen, they have the option to choose for themselves which faction will be theirs for the rest of their lives, whether it's the one they grew up in or not.īeatrice Prior is a sixteen-year-old member of Abnegation. Each faction places value solely on a specific virtue, which its members work to cultivate throughout their lives. In a futuristic, dystopian Chicago, society is organized into five factions. We – myself and my small coterie of fellow comics readers, with whom I’m now hardly in touch and one of whom is dead – judged Watchmen to be realistic: grimy, gritty, containing sexual acts and acts of senseless violence.īut while Dave Gibbons’s art is detailed in content, drawing every label on every sweet wrapper, it’s somewhat cartoony in form and doesn’t have the fine hatching that was thought crucial for anyone aspiring to realism, something we ignored at the time. No artist who dashed of page after page of exaggerated, hypermuscled figures could make a claim for realism, but those were the artists we called realistic. Almost everything we read had just such men. No book which featured a man who could fly would be thought realistic. It was the building block of everything that followed.īut what was realism? Certainly it wasn’t the same quality you’d see in prose fiction or in art. It was the vital quality that we looked for realism meant a comic that was worth bothering with, that was of the present rather than the past, that recognised our maturity as readers. Trying to recall exactly what we meant, back in our teenage comic-reading days, when we talked about “realism” isn’t easy. We are sharing it here to mark the release of the new hardback edition of Zenith: Phase II from 2000 AD.
